Migrating ui-select (angular-ui-select) to modern Angular
ui-select replaced native selects with searchable, taggable dropdowns. It has been unmaintained for years.
What replaces it
| Option | When to choose it |
|---|---|
| ng-select | Closest match: search, multi-select, tagging, custom templates. |
| Angular Material autocomplete / select | When the app is moving to Material. |
| CDK Listbox or Angular Aria | When you build your own design system; Angular Aria (from Angular 21) adds headless listbox and combobox directives. |
How to migrate it
- Find every ui-select and note which features it uses: search, multiple, tagging, remote loading.
- Build one shared wrapper component around the replacement so forms use a single API.
- Connect it to reactive forms through ControlValueAccessor, then swap usages screen by screen.
Watch out. Remote search with refresh and refresh-delay becomes an observable with debounce and switchMap. It is a good moment to fix duplicate and out-of-order requests.
