Migrating angular-socket-io / WebSocket services to modern Angular
angular-socket-io wrapped the Socket.IO client in a factory that ran callbacks inside the digest cycle and could forward events to scopes. Other apps used hand-written WebSocket services built on $rootScope.
What replaces it
| Option | When to choose it |
|---|---|
| socket.io-client in a service | When the server uses Socket.IO: wrap the official client in an injectable service that exposes observables or signals. |
| RxJS webSocket | When the server speaks plain WebSocket; it gives you a subject that works with retry and other operators. |
| ngx-socket-io | A ready-made Angular wrapper around socket.io-client. |
How to migrate it
- List the events the app emits and listens to, with their payload types.
- Create one connection service in Angular, downgrade it and make the legacy code use it.
- Expose each event as an observable or signal, and remove the listeners when the component is destroyed.
Watch out. Open a single connection for the whole hybrid app, not one per framework, or you get duplicate events. Also check the server version first: a current Socket.IO client cannot connect to a version 2 server.
Other libraries
- angular-permission
- angular-xeditable
- angular-bootstrap-datetimepicker / ui-date
- angular-pdf / pdf.js directives
