Migrating angular-datatables (jQuery DataTables) to modern Angular
angular-datatables wrapped the jQuery DataTables plugin in AngularJS directives, configured with DTOptionsBuilder and DTColumnBuilder. A version for modern Angular exists, but it still depends on jQuery.
What replaces it
| Option | When to choose it |
|---|---|
| Angular Material table / CDK table | When the table needs sorting, paging and simple filters. |
| AG Grid | When you rely on advanced features: fixed columns, grouping, export, virtual scroll. |
| PrimeNG Table | An open-source table with filters, column features and CSV export ready-made. |
How to migrate it
- List the DataTables features and extensions in use: server-side processing, export buttons, fixed columns, responsive mode.
- Decide who owns paging, sorting and search. If the server does, document the request and response format.
- Build one shared table component on the replacement and migrate each table together with its screen.
Watch out. DataTables server-side processing sends its own parameters (draw, start, length, search, order). Either keep a small adapter in the new data service or change the API, but decide it explicitly.
